Abstract

Levine recounts the issues related to the battle between the Federalists and the Republican parties for supremacy in the New Jersey state legislature in 1814.  He relies heavily on a rare document in Rutgers Special Collections. "Proceedings and Address of the Second Convention of Delegates held at the City of Trenton on Fourth July, 1814, to the People of New Jersey."  It contains the minutes, the address, and the resolutions of the Federalist conclave. This document thus presents both a description of the convention and a summation of the Federalist appeal for the 1814 campaign.
