Abstract

Coad describes the Rutgers Library collection of "song sheets" from Victorian America.  The song sheets generally have the words but not the musical notation of the songs.  The predominate mood of the songs is sentimentality.  These bits of ephemera are significant, according to Coad, for the following reason: "Commanding in their day an audience of millions, they offer some documented insight into the average American mind of their time."
