Abstract

Slater writes about the incunabulum, "Diver and Paupers" (Westminister, 1496) acquired by the Library, which had wide attractiveness for earlier readers.  A book about the ten commandments, it appealed to both Catholics and Protestants alike.  This particular copy has interesting marginalia reflecting the opinions of its owners over the centuries.  The author's orthodoxy never comes seriously into question, but within its context he almost always chooses the gentler path.
