Abstract

Shawcross examines the transformation of John Milton's work  "Comus" into song by the composer Henry Lawes ( 1595–1662), derived from revisions of the basic transcription in Milton's manuscript in the library of Trinity College, Cambridge.  This examination reveals Milton's frequent changing of text and apparent lack of satisfaction with his earlier work.  These revisions even took place after his work was set to music.
