Goethe, Rolli, and "Solitario Bosco Ombroso"

George E. Dorris

Abstract

Dorris elaborates on a passage from Goethe's autobiograph "Dichtung und Wahrheit," in which Goethe mentions an italian song he learned by heart as a child.  It is  "Solitario Bosco Ombroso,"  written by Paolo Antonio Rolli (1687-1765).  He points out the significance of the song and of the Rutgers' copy of Rolli's book "Di Canzonette e di Cantate, libri due" of 1727 which contains it.
