Abstract

This article explores the mournful quality of the "Sonnets" of William L. Bowles (1762–1850), which was both hailed and derided, epecially by Lord Byron. Kelllogg uses used unpublished correspondence held in the Rutgers Library to demonstrate that the "Sonnets" are in no real sense "maudlin," but the genuine expression of deeply felt personal sorrow.
