Abstract

Best known of the English-born, eighteenth century itinerant artists working in the United States, both because of his high artistic ability as well as his extensive work, is James Sharples. A group of four portraits by Sharples was included in the bequest of James Neilson, 1866, to Rutgers University. They include portraits of George Washington, John Voorhees, Colonel John Neilson, and his wife, Catherine Voorhees Neilson.
